| Grand Coulee Dam, Columbia Basin Project, located on the Columbia River in Washington, is one of the largest concrete structures in the world. The original (or main) dam is a straight-gravity type, massive concrete structure consisting of a river overflow spillway section, 1,650 feet long and adjoining abutment sections which give the original dam a total crest length of 4,173 feet. From the lowest point of its granite base, the dam rises to a height of 550 feet. The powerplant is the country's largest hydroelectric plant and generates more power than a million locomotives.The Visitor Arrival Center at Grand Coulee Dam is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. During the winter season, October 1 to Memorial Day weekend, the hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For the summer season, Memorial Day through the end of September, the center is open from 8:30 a.m. until the end of the laser show each evening. Free tours of the dam are available. There is no fee for the Visitor Arrival Center, or the evening laser show.The laser show is done nightly from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September on the following schedule:May 29 through July - 10 p.m.Month of August - 9:30 p.m.Month of September - 8:30 p.m.Call 1-800-coulee-2 for free visitors packet. |
